Different Types of Care Offered to Residents in a Care Home
The care options available at a care home can differ. Some care homes are exclusively Residential Homes, while others offer a wide range of care services. So, what care is available and what’s the difference between them?
1. Residential Care Homes - Residential care is the term used to describe the overall care and support offered at a care facility. It's also referred to as "personal care", “group living” or "assisted living." People who require assistance with things such as washing, clothing, mobility support, and so on, are cared for in a Residential Care Home. Residential care is ideal for those who require a little assistance now and then to enable them to continue doing the things they enjoy, but who can live independently for the most part.
Residential Care Homes offer:
- A healthy and active lifestyle
- Independent living, with support where required
- Autonomous Life - with the freedom to choose how they spend their days, selecting their own entertainment, activities, food, bedtime, and much more
- Professional, skilled staff available 24 hours a day
2. Nursing Care Homes - Nursing Care encompasses all the benefits that Residential Care holds, as well as meeting medical needs. This type of care is ideal for individuals who require support due to physical limitations, mental health disorders, and long-term health conditions. Registered Nurses, District Nurses, and Nurse Practitioners have the skills and qualifications to dispense medication, contribute to a resident's plan of care, cooperate with medical professionals, provide personalised nursing care, and are charged with caring for those living in a Nursing Home.
Nursing Care Homes offer:
- A higher level of care, including medical support
- Designed to be suited to people living with disabilities, immobility, and long term medical conditions
- Staffed by Registered Nurses
- Support by GPs, pharmacists, and specialist medical teams to ensure the highest standards of care
- Fully equipped with niche Nursing equipment such as specialist beds, hoists, and call systems
3. Care Homes with Dementia Care - A care home that specialises in Dementia Care will offer the same environment, facilities and support you would find in a Residential Care Home. It will, however, also be staffed with a team of specialists who are fully trained in Dementia Care. The home itself and the surroundings will have been designed with Dementia at the forefront of decisions; designed to make them feel safe and comfortable, large visible signage, orienting items such as large clocks, and use of contrasting colours for example.
Care Home with Dementia Care offer:
- A safe and secure environment, resulting in fewer hospital admissions
- A home-away-from-home / familiar surroundings to retain memories
- Constant companionship from both carers and loved ones
- Maintaining dignity, routine, and independence
- Dementia-friendly, meaningful activities
- Dementia-friendly decor and furnishings - clear signs to help residents to find their way around and identify their own room or toilets, for example
- Ongoing Dementia Staff Training
4. Dual Registered Care Homes - These types of care homes offer multiple care services under one roof. It encompasses a number of care options to cover a range of needs; for example, residents could benefit from Residential with Nursing Care or Residential and Dementia Care. Dual Registered Care Homes provide reassurance that should a person’s needs change, the care home can adapt the care plan accordingly; those who initially need personal care but later needs Nursing or Dementia Care won’t have to change homes.

How are we able to offer so many care options?
Our team is made up of highly-skilled and experienced individuals who deliver the highest level of care. Everyone at Ridgeway Rise is required to complete the mandatory training needed to work in the care industry, but this is just the start of their journey in delivering first-class care to their residents.
The ever-changing landscape of the industry means additional training is frequently needed, and with our home boasting 3 in-house trainers, all training is completed onsite with no need for external companies to be brought in. The advantage is that this means there is no time delay when more advanced competence is required.
Care Assistants are required to complete a Care Certificate and Ridgeway Rise even have specialist leads in specific areas, for example, Oral Hygiene, to make sure the highest standard of care is always being delivered, with one of our nurses even becoming a finalist at the Great British Care Awards. Andreea Birligea is a 2021 finalist at the Great British Care Awards in the End of Life Care category. Andreea actively participates in developing comprehensive care plans and relevant risk assessments. She established a great network of support with other healthcare professionals, who specialise in palliative care. She always makes sure that care is personalised to the wishes and preferences as previously discussed with the resident and their family.
Our dedication to delivering training excellence puts us in the perfect position to adapt to each resident's needs. Most recently, a resident with Huntington's disease moved into Ridgeway Rise and in response to this new addition, the whole staff underwent training to ensure everyone was best placed to provide the best possible care to that resident.
What’s the difference between Care Homes and Live-in Care?
The difference between live-in care and a care home is that a live-in care service allows the person being cared for to stay in and receive support in the comfort of their own home, whereas a care home offers the person a new home in a building with other people who also need care.
A care home offers:
- A healthy and active lifestyle where both wellbeing and medical care are supported
- 24-hour Professional Support from a number of qualified carers such as a Care Manager, Nurses, and so on
- Advantageous to those with more demanding and specialised care needs
- Social Benefits - Group living with like-minded individuals
- Autonomous way of life - with the freedom to choose entertainment, activities, food, bedtime and much more
- Access to on-site facilities and services, such as a library, hairdresser, day trips and so on
- A variety of types of healthcare options to cover a spectrum of medical needs
