Colin is our new activity coordinator at Ridgeway Rise Care Home in Swindon, and upon joining our team, he has recognised the amount of interest in historical characters, famous personas, and events.
Luckily for us, Colin specialises in giving different talks about people, places, and occasions with a rich history. Colin is therefore including these talks as a part of the varied activities programme we have here.
To accompany his talks, Colin has prepared an activity trolley that is covered in pictures of famous battles, inventions, and people, which are great conversation starters.
The trolley is also filled with old artifacts, memorabilia, and information sheets. Fantastic reminiscing activity and very educational for both – residents and the team.
This month, Colin chose to research and talk about much-loved English writer, Beatrix Potter, and her amazing life. Best known for her tales of Peter Rabbit, Colin managed to get a cut out of Peter Rabbit from the local cinema as a special addition to the session.
The residents gathered to hear the talk, where Colin took everyone on a journey back in time, speaking about her literature and how her talent was overlooked by her mother, and presenting her early paintings.
Colin dressed up for the occasion and with his resources and knowledge, he created an atmosphere of a sophisticated soiree.
To really add to the occasion, our kitchen prepared cream scones and coffee for the residents to enjoy whilst they were listening to Colin. Residents then had a photo session with Peter Rabbit and an opportunity to ask Colin questions.
The talk was such a success that Colin has scheduled some more for the future, including ones about Churchill, Duke Wellington, Titanic, the Battle of Trafalgar, Shakespeare, and many more. We very much look forward to them!
