Ridgeway Rise Care Home resident, Joe, is spearheading a heartfelt campaign to restore the damaged sign marking the Source of the River Thames, a cause deeply connected to his life’s work as a former volunteer for the Thames Path National Trail. Joe’s efforts, along with support from Ridgeway Rise, have drawn attention to the importance of preserving this historic landmark and making it accessible to future generations.

For several years, Joe dedicated himself as a volunteer to maintaining and protecting the path that runs from Somerford Keynes to the Source of the Thames. His role included ensuring the trail was clear and safe for visitors, removing obstructions, and monitoring the condition of the path through fields and wooded areas. Joe recalls the challenges he faced, from overgrown nettles and briars to fallen trees after storms, and the sense of fulfilment that came with knowing he was contributing to a vital piece of Britain’s natural heritage.

One of Joe’s most memorable experiences during his time as a volunteer was meeting visitors from across the globe who were drawn to the iconic River Thames. He fondly remembers a couple from Philadelphia who travelled to the UK to walk the entire Thames Path from its Source to the Thames Barrier. Encounters like these reinforced Joe’s belief in the significance of the path and the responsibility he felt to protect and preserve it.

Joe told stories to his fellow residents and Alla, our Activity coordinator. Alla visited the location and brought back sad news, that the post marking this important landmark had been damaged. Together with Joe, Alla wrote a letter to Thames Path National Trail asking them to replace the sign. They were very prompt with their reply, thanking for the report and promising to contact the owner of the land for permission to replace it. The trail's Engagement Officer expressed gratitude for Joe’s report and confirmed plans to contact the landowner for permission to install a new sign.

The Thames Path National Trail team was so inspired by Joe’s passion and his connection to the trail that they proposed a special initiative: free guided walks and activities along the Thames for care home residents and those in sheltered accommodations. This initiative not only honours Joe’s legacy but also allows Ridgeway Rise residents to engage in safe, accessible outdoor activities.

Joe’s involvement in this campaign has been a source of pride and purpose for him, as he reflects on his years as a volunteer and the importance of showcasing the country’s natural beauty. “It meant I played my part in showing our country in its best light. It gave me a sense of purpose after losing my wife,” Joe said. “I felt it was important. It gave me the sense of contributing to something that was very special.”

Joe’s campaign highlights how Ridgeway Rise Care Home fosters a sense of community and encourages residents to remain active participants in causes that matter to them. The care home’s commitment to supporting Joe’s advocacy efforts and ensuring other residents have the opportunity to engage in nature-focused activities reflects its dedication to holistic care—promoting both physical wellbeing and emotional fulfilment.

Thanks to Joe and Alla's collaboration with the Thames Path National Trail, care home residents may soon enjoy guided walks along one of Britain’s most cherished routes, with the assurance of safety and accessibility. Joe’s determination to preserve the Source of the River Thames ensures that this important landmark will continue to inspire and educate visitors for years to come.
