World Alzheimer’s Day

World Alzheimers Day took place on the 21st September and is part of a wider event; World Alzheimer’s Month. At Ridgeway Rise, our event of the month has been focused on recognising Alzheimer’s and has featured a variety of activities that raise awareness for dementia as well as support and educate those experiencing dementia and those affected.

We recognise that photographs and imagery play a big part in reminiscence for those who are affected by the symptoms of dementia. As a result, the theme for our World Alzheimer's Month event had a focus on photographs which we lovingly titled Memories & Matter.

Residents began by going on trips around Swindon to take pictures of the town, which would then make up a photo gallery at our home and also be part of a competition we were hosting for the best picture.

The residents had a fantastic time in the fresh air and they also got the opportunity to use different devices to capture their images including iPads and cameras, with the support of some of our staff members.

During the trips, residents visited old parts of Swindon that they remember from 'their time' as many are born and bred Swindonians. They took their fellow residents and friends from other parts of the country and introduced them to the town's most-loved attractions, including Lydiard Park and County Ground.

Back at our home, we had set up the exhibition using display panels that had been kindly donated by the Swindon Artists Forum. The panels displayed the resident's photographs in reception for a week and relatives, residents, staff members, and visitors were all invited to vote.

We also had panels that presented important facts about Alzheimer's disease and dementia, to further educate those in our home and those who visit who may not be as familiar with the condition.

On the 21st Septmeber, World Alzheimer's Day itself, we had a live entertainer visit us and take us on a journey down memory lane. Residents gathered around with musical instruments, dancing, laughing, and sharing fond memories. We also had a chocolate fountain and bubbly drinks for our residents to enjoy.

We also picked a winner for the photograph competition, who was presented with a sweet hamper and a certificate. The votes were extremely close and therefore a runner-up was also decided. Congratulations to Kay who won for her Ice House picture, and to Christine who came in second place with a stunning shot of the local Ridge. Well done ladies!

At Ridgeway Rise, we are big ambassadors for dementia in our local community and we do all that we can to help raise awareness and offer support, care, understanding, and friendship to those living with dementia and their families. We often take part in campaigns surrounding dementia such as Dementia Action Week and have close ties with memory cafés in the local area.

We are proud to provide dementia care to those in Swindon. If you would like to find out more information about dementia support or any of our care services then please get in touch with our friendly team who will be happy to help.
